A consultation is a conversation, not an examination with some talking around it. What you’ve noticed. How long it’s been going on. What you’re actually worried it might be — which is often different from the symptom you came in to describe.

Then a plain answer: what it most likely is, what the options are, what each one involves, and what happens if you decide to do nothing at all. That last part matters. A good deal of gynecology is reassurance and watchful waiting, and being told honestly that something needs no treatment is a legitimate outcome of a visit.

Most of what women hesitate to come in about turns out to be common, treatable, and far less frightening than the version they had been carrying around in their head.
